Lions rookie Ryan Broyles gets cussed out by head coach

Second round draft pick Ryan Broyles out of Oklahoma probably thought his first official NFL practice would go a little more smoother than it did. Broyles, who was taken off the physically unable to perform list on Sunday, was, as Michigan Live puts it “Schwartzed” during practice.

The rookie was about to participate in one-on-one drills against a defensive back, but did not have his chin strap on. Next, came the verbal abuse by the Lions head coach Jim Schwartz. According to sources, Broyles was told he waited months to play and still was not ready but in a much more non-family friend way.

Broyles laughed when asked about Schwartz’s critique after practice.

“That’s a part of football,” Broyles said. “You love that when a coach gets on you. That means he cares. That’s a good thing.”

Schwartz did not think much of it when asked.

“I barked at a lot of people,” Schwartz said.

Lions receiver Nate Burleson put Broyles’ initiation into the world of Schwartz in perfect perspective.

“Yeah, I think that was expected,” Burleson said. “If he would have came out here and had a perfect day, he still would have got yelled at. You have to go through that as a rookie. He’s not gonna slide right in without having the fire put to him a little bit.

“I talked to Shawn Jefferson a little bit, our receivers coach — he’s like an evil genius, sometimes he does things on purpose, just to see how you respond. For him (Broyles), he’s going to have to catch up fast. He’s going to have to get used to that harsh criticism by the coaches and that high speed of the game. He’s doing pretty good for it being his first day.”
