Matt Leinart: I deserve to start
After Carson Palmer was injured during the team’s week 16 game with Carolina, back up Matt Leinart stepped in as the starter. With the announcement that Carson Palmer will be unavailable this week, the starting position is down to Matt Leinart or Terrelle Pryor.
According to Leinart, he deserves to start this weekend.
“I just think in this situation, I think I deserve to play, I deserve to start. Not sure what’s going to happen, but that’s all you can do — just keep preparing, keep working hard, be here, be accountable and whatever happens, whatever decision is made, that’s what’s made. You can’t do anything about it,” Leinart said, via CBSSports.com. ”So if they want to start Terrelle and evaluate him and see what he can do, then I’ll support that, and I’ll help him this week and help him during the game. But if they make me the starter, I’m just going to go out there and try to capitalize on that opportunity.”
Leinart has been everything but impressive since be drafting in 2006. The former USC star was drafted by Arizona before being replaced by Kurt Warner. While in Arizona multiple reports came forward that Leinart was lazy and more focused on partying than working to improve himself. Leinart left Arizona following the 2009 season.
From there, Leinart signed with Houston before joining the Raiders this off-season.
Whether or not Leinart thinks he is going to impress a team enough to sign him as a starter is beyond me. However, I think Leinart will never be anything but a backup.
