Matt Schaub to start, says he isn’t worried about crowd reaction
After rookie quarterback Case Keenum suffered a sprain thumb Sunday against the Colts, it looks as if Matt Schaub –much to the dismay of Texans fans– will be getting the nod going into their upcoming game against the Denver Broncos.
The last time Texans fans saw Matt Schaub he was throwing a late pick after replacing injured Case Keenum late in the 3rd in a 20-27 loss to the Jaguars. Which makes it understandable why this is such an unpopular decision for Texans fans.
Although Schaub’s return to the starting quarterback role might bring negativity from fans, interim head coach Wade Phillips is singing a different tune. “Our team’s 100 percent behind him.” said Phillips.
As the discussion went on, Phillips was asked about crowd reaction on Sunday. “He’s determined to come out and play well. We’re going to support him.” said Phillips. “I’m not worried about (a negative crowd reaction) because I know a majority of our fans are with us no matter what. … This is our last home game, so we need a lot of support, and I think we’ll get it.”
Schaub will surely need all of the support he can get from the fans as the AFC’s number one seed Broncos come to town with a 11-3 record.
When Schaub was asked if he was worried about negative crowd reaction, Schaub stated, “Not at all.”
It’s not just the coaching staff rallying around Schaub, Texans defensive lineman, Antonio Smith demanded: “Leave Matt Schaub alone.”
Worried or not, the negative crowd reaction is likely to come for Schaub as he looks forward to starting what might possibly be his last home game with the Texans and possibly his last chance to show other NFL teams that he can still play the position at a high level.
