Many football fans have heard over the last few years about Michael Oher’s remarkable journey and development as a football player. It was a story so touching that it merited a movie, which was up for Best Picture at the 2009 Academy Awards.

That dream of Oher’s is staying alive. According to Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Oher will remain the Baltimore Ravens’ starting left tackle. The Ravens had been playing Oher at the right tackle spot for most of his NFL career to this point, but now Oher moves back to the famous “blind side” spot where he made a name for himself throughout high school and at Ole Miss. Bryant McKinnie’s offseason holdout gave Oher the opportunity to start at left tackle in the regular season opener against Cincinnati, and now coach John Harbaugh has given the job to Oher on a starting basis.

Oher was one member of an offensive line that came out a little bit unexpectedly for the season opener. Rookie Kelechi Osemele started at right tackle after Oher’s departure, and third-year veteran Ramon Harewood started at left guard, a position vacated following Ben Grubbs’s departure to New Orleans in free agency. Coach Harbaugh still felt very good about his group of offensive linemen, saying after the game, “We have a bunch of guys right now that we think we can play on our offensive line…so it goes from a perceived weakness to what we always thought was a strength and we just have to build on that.”

This week, his first as a bona fide starter, Oher gets to face off against Trent Cole and the fearsome Philadelphia pass rush. It will be quite the test for the young Oher, but what a great story line it would be if he finds continued NFL success at the left tackle position.
