On Saturday, Michael Sam became the first openly gay football player to be drafted by the NFL.  The St. Louis Rams made him their seventh round pick when they took him 249th overall.

Such a monumental event will obviously get noticed by the most powerful man in the world, the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama.

Obama congratulated Sam in a White House statement.

“The President congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams and the NFL for taking an important step forward in our Nation’s journey. From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are.”

You can watch Michael Sam’s emotional response to being drafted below.
