Osi Umenyiora: I’m healthy for the first time since 2006

New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora said today he feels healthy for the first time since 2006.

Today, New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora had an interesting comment to make about his health over the last five seasons. Apparently, Umenyiora has not been 100 percent healthy since the 2006 season.

While talking with the New York Daily News Umenyiora spoke on his health.

“Yeah, health (matters), for sure,” Umenyiora said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. “Well I hope so because these last couple of years I’ve been playing with little nagging things here and there. But now for the first time in a while I feel relatively healthy and I hope I’m able to maintain that throughout the year.”

It’s amazing to think that Umenyiora hasn’t been fully healthy in any of the last six seasons, considering he’s totaled 46.5 sacks in 68 games played during that time. If 2005 was his last fully healthy season, he was just 24 then and he had his breakthrough season with 14.5 sacks.

Umenyiora is hoping that he can put together an amazing season that will result in a huge contract in March. However, he told the Daily News that he is not focusing on his contract and just wants to go out there and play.

“Well, we’ll see,” Umenyiora said. “There’s really no telling. The sky’s the limit. At least I hope so. I’m just going to go out there and perform to the best of my ability and hopefully I’ll be able to help this team win.”
