Raiders part ways with LB Rolando McClain

It’s been a long time coming, but the day is finally here for Raiders fans – the team has parted ways with former eighth overall pick, LB Rolando McClain.

The Raiders announced they placed him on waivers Friday afternoon.

McClain was selected eighth overall in the 2010 NFL Draft, and did not live up to expectations on and off the field.

In 2011, McClain was arrested for assault and firing a weapon in city limits in his hometown of Decatur, AL, he was later sentenced to 180 days in jail before reaching a financial settlement with the victim and the victim dropping the charges.

In 2012, McClain was arrested in Decatur again for providing Police with a false name after being pulled over for a window tint violation. McClain signed his ticket with “F*** Y’all” and wouldn’t cooperate with Police, leading to his arrest.

He was a bust on the field, too, accounting for 244 tackles and 6.5 sacks in three years with the Raiders.

He was escorted out of team facilities during a practice in November 2012 as well after an incident that resulted in him being suspended for the rest of the teams season.

Since he was placed on waivers, a team can claim him by Monday. Although unlikely, it is a possibility.

McClain provided a statement after the move via ProFootballTalk:

“I’d like to thank the Raiders for giving me an opportunity to play in the NFL,” He said. “I’m disappointed that it hasn’t worked out better, but I’m very excited and thankful. I will miss my teammates and wish them and the Raiders organization good luck going forward.”

I don’t think the feeling was mutual, as Raiders fans on social media went haywire, celebrating the release of the 23-year-old linebacker.

This is one of many moves Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie has made since taking over the team a season ago. McClain is one of many former first round picks pushed out the door as the Raiders prepare for a new era and continue to rebuild.

Second year LB Miles Burris will likely be the replacement to McClain after seeing his playing time increase last season for the Silver and Black.
