Redskins will go with the hot hand at running back

We reported on Monday that Evan Royster was “not buying” himself at the top of the depth chart. We also noted that Mike Shanahan likes to spread the carries around and is more than capable of making mediocre players into 1,000 yard backs.

So with Royster and Roy Helu and Alfred Morris on the roster, who will be the lead dog?  It depends.

“I’m comfortable with all three,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said Thursday.  “There is no set philosophy.”

This means that it can be any, some, or all of them who gets the bulk of the carries in a given game, based on which guy gets hot.  Or, eventually which guy gets injured.

One guy who will do some running that they don’t want to see injured is quarterback Robert Griffin III.  Shanahan said he “holds his breath” every time Griffin runs.  That said, Shanahan wants Griffin to be willing to run.

But presumably not more than the tailback who has the hot hand.
