When the Arizona Cardinals report to camp, two quarterbacks, John Skelton and Kevin Kolb, will be battling for the starting position. According to one report, the locker room is rooting for Skelton to win.

Former NFL linebacker Willie McGinest, who now works at NFL Network, said on Total Access that he has friends on the Cardinals and that they’ve told him they prefer Skelton over Kolb.

“Talking to some of my buddies down there, it seems like they’re gravitating toward Skelton a little bit more,” McGinest said.

McGinest suggested that the players respect Skelton more because of the way he fought his way up from a fifth round pick, while Kolb was simply handed the starting job and a big contract.

“He’s a big quarterback, he’s tough in the pocket, he has a carefree attitude, he really doesn’t have any pressure,” McGinest said of Skelton. “He didn’t get a huge contract like Kolb did, and he’s one of those guys that can command a huddle, can come in there, and guys just like his attitude.”

McGinest also questioned whether Kolb is a winner.

“In six years he’s won five games. Kolb’s won five games in six years,” McGinest said.

McGinest is actually wrong about Kolb’s record as he is 6-10 in five NFL seasons. However, he is not wrong in that the Cardinals looked more successful with Skelton as the starter. With camps already started or right around the corner, battles like these will be decided soon.

One Response to Report: Cardinals teammates prefer Skelton over Kolb

  • Shaun Church says:

Kolb getting credit for the Week 14 victory over San Francisco—the game in which he received a concussion—is not very fair, is it? Technically he started, but he played only three snaps of the game.

McGinest understands it’s Skelton’s victory. Kolb had nothing to do with the outcome.
