A case that was presumed closed from December of 2012 has been re-opened, in which an unidentified woman has accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual assault. There have been many twists and turns from then until now, with both sides telling a different version of why the case was inactive for so long.

In a recent statement by the accuser’s family (in which they heavily criticized the Tallahassee Police Department), they claim that the accuser was warned about pursuing charges against Winston.

Via USA Today:

In early January, the woman identified Winston as the attacker, the letter says. The family became concerned that she “would be targeted on campus” and requested help from an attorney friend, the letter says. The attorney contacted TPD Detective Scott Angulo.

“When the attorney contacted Detective Angulo immediately after Winston was identified, Detective Angulo told the attorney that Tallahassee was a big football town and the victim needs to think long and hard before proceeding against him because she will be raked over the coals and her life will be made miserable.”

Detective Angulo apparently did not collect Winston’s DNA after the alleged incident, nor did he interview his roommate, who is a possible witness. The family finally said they decided to come forward in an attempt to get the case re-opened and moving because of the TPD’s “questionable investigation.”

Either way, it’s unfair to convict Winston in the court of public opinion. Whether he’s guilty or not will be determined by an investigation and a court date. This isn’t the first time charges popped up out of left field against a high-profile athlete, and it won’t be the last. Let’s just hope the police get this one right and explore all avenues before charging or exonerating Winston.
