Report: New York Jets Cut LB Aaron Maybin, Sign RB Kahlil Bell

Per New York Jets beat writer for Newsday Kimberly Martin’s Twitter feed, the Jets have cut outside linebacker Aaron Maybin and per CBS Sports Jason LaCanfora’s Twitter feed, have signed former Bears running back Kahlil Bell. Per Martin, Maybin received the call during a Jets Charity Food Bank event and departed after the call.

Maybin was selected in the first round (11th) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. In his rookie season, he recorded just 18 tackles despite playing all 16 games, and in 2010, he recorded just six tackles and zero sacks. The Bills waived him in August 2011, after which he was signed by the Jets two days later. The Jets waived him shortly after, but then resigned him again three weeks later. The 2011 season was a “career season” for Maybin, as he recorded 11 tackles and six sacks. This year Maybin has done little, recording just one tackle in six games.

Bell entered the NFL draft the same year as Maybin but went undrafted and signed with the Chicago Bears. On his first NFL carry, Bell scored a 72-yard touchdown, an NFL record for a player’s first carry. After Bears starting running backs Matt Forte and Marion Barber went down with injuries, Bell started the final two games of the season. Bell accepted a one-year qualifying offer of $1.26 million from the Bears in April 2012, but was cut when he refused to reduce the number to $700,000.
