Per a report from ESPNNY’s Darren Rovell,Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s, more commonly known as RGIII, No. 10 jersey will set the NFL record for jersey sales. The NFL only recently started keeping track of jersey sales statistics six years ago, and the numbers are pulled from the league’s official internet store, NFLshop.com. RGIII’s jersey beats the record previously held by Brett Favre’s, who had the distinction of holding the record twice, first with the New York Jets in 2008 and then again with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009. The league fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31, which means RGIII broke the record with over three months left.
The rookie quarterback has taken the NFL and athletic endorsements by force this year. On the field, RGIII has guided the Redskins to the top of the NFC East division, completing 66.4% of his passes for 2,902 yards, 18 touchdowns and just four interceptions, good for a 104,2 passer rating. He has also rushed for 734 yards and another six touchdowns. Off the field, RGIII has been merchandising gold for athletic companies seeking his endorsements. Fanatics.com reports that for the same period last year, December sales for Redskins apparel is up 252 percent, the highest percentage increase for any NFL team. The Fanatics spokesman also said that 87 percent of Redskins merchandise has been purchased outside the Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virgina areas. Adidas reports that the line of socks RGIII endorses have sold out, despite selling at a $20 premium price per pair.
All in all, not a bad year for RGIII.
