The San Diego Chargers have announced today that former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy has been hired as their next head coach. Following a 7-9 season, one in which the San Diego Chargers missed the playoffs again, the team fired head coach Norv Turner.

Since firing Turner, the team has not made a lot of noise in bringing in potential candidates for the head coaching position. Perhaps, they knew McCoy was their man and wanted to wait for the Broncos’ season to end.

The team held a press conference at 5pm EST to announce the hiring of McCoy.

San Diego president and CEO Dean Spanos introduced McCoy at the press conference, calling McCoy the “right man” for the job. Spanos lauded McCoy’s qualities, saying that McCoy has an “innovative mind for building offenses,” and that he has a “structured vision on how to build and coach a team.”

According to McCoy, after interviewing with the Chargers, he knew they were the team for him. McCoy went on to cite that the team’s foundation gave him a place where he could build a winner for a long time.

The oddest part about the hire is McCoy said he will hire an offensive coordinator. As a former offensive coordinator in Denver, one would figure McCoy would want to call the plays. Instead, someone else will be running his offense in San Diego.

This will certainly make next year’s Chargers vs Broncos games a little more interesting.
