Seahawks sign hoops player Darren Fells as tight end

  • Joe Ray

The NFL may have just added the next member to its family of basketball players turned tight end. Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham…Darren Fells?

That’s right, a basketball player that few people have heard of is the newest tight end of the Seattle Seahawks. Darren Fells is a 6’7″, 280-pound mammoth who will be bigger than most of his counterparts as he switches sports. Fells has played basketball in Mexico, France, Finland, Belgium, and most recently Argentina. Check out this video of Fells in action while playing in Finland.

Fells doesn’t seem like the fastest guy from these highlights, but he knows how to use his size and can really get vertical. That’s enough to make a roster in the NFL when you have that kind of natural size. Like Gates at Kent State, Fells never played college football. He played basketball for the University of California, Irvine.

If the last name looks familiar to anyone, Darren is the brother of Patriots tight end Daniel Fells, who is the older of the two but a bit smaller at 6’4″ and 265 pounds.

Fells is now the largest tight end on the Seahawks’ roster. He may struggle to get lots of playing time, as the Seahawks already have two sound contributors Zach Miller and Anthony McCoy, both of whom are 6’5″. Regardless, the Seahawks’ diminutive quarterback, Russell Wilson, will surely appreciate the added height in the passing game.
