Sources: Mike Wallace not reporting to Steelers camp

Despite a premature congratulations by a teammate yesterday, it looks like Mike Wallace and the Pittsburgh Steelers did not actually come to an agreement on an extension. Today, ESPN’s John Clayton is reporting that not only have talks between the two sides broken down, but that the Steelers organization will not talk extension with Wallace until he shows up for camp.

The Steelers players had a deadline of 4pm EST to show up for the team’s mini-camp. Because Wallace is not under contract, the team does not have the option to fine him the league maximum $30,000 a day.

Wallace skipped all of the team’s offseason workouts and has not signed his $2.7 million first-round tender. The Steelers have the franchise tag available after the season if Wallace plays out this year under the one-year restricted tender.

General manager Kevin Colbert reiterated last month that the speedy Wallace remains in the team’s future plans.

“Our intention has always been to sign Mike to a long-term contract,” Colbert said.

Steelers team president Art Rooney II also has said the team wants to sign Wallace to a multi-year contract.

Wallace caught 72 passes for 1,193 yards and eight passing touchdowns last season, all team highs. In three seasons, he has 171 catches for 3,206 yards and 24 TDs.
