After the Rams failed to make the playoffs, running back Steven Jackson contemplated returning to the team, then retirement and then the idea of signing with another team. Now, it appears as though Jackson will have, if he chooses, the opportunity to sign with another team.

Jackson has elected to void the final year of his contract with the Rams and test free agency.

By voiding the final year of his contract, Jackson is forgoing the opportunity to earn $7 million with the Rams next season.

Jackson said in December that he was optimistic about returning to the Rams and ending his career with the team. The chance to re-sign with the team are strengthened by the fact that head coach Jeff Fisher has also offered optimism about the team being able to re-sign Jackson. Fisher says that discussions have gone well so far.

However, Jackson should see plenty of suitors who are willing to pay him more than the Rams may offer.

I could see the Lions, Packers, Bengals and Cardinals all knocking down the door to sign Jackson. While the back is on the back end of his career, he can definitely still have an impact on an offense.

The Rams career rushing leader has rushed for over 1,000 yards in eight of his nine seasons and rushed for 10,135 yards and 56 touchdowns for his career.
