Stokley: Thomas, Decker were mad that I stopped their celebration

Denver Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley told the Denver Post that he gave Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker a little veteran leadership during Sunday Night’s game against New Orleans. During the third quarter of their game, third year receiver Demaryius Thomas scored a touchdown. Thomas decided to celebrate the touchdown with the help of third year receiver Eric Decker.

Thomas threw the ball to Decker, who was asked to throw the ball back to Thomas so he could dunk it through the goalposts, similar to an alley-oop dunk. However, veteran receiver Brandon Stokley stole the ball from Decker before he could throw the ball back to Thomas.

Stokley knew that the referees would have penalized the Broncos 15 yards for the coordinated celebration and says he knows his role on the team is to provide veteran leadership to the younger receivers. Stokley also told the Denver Post that Thomas and Decker were mad at him on the sidelines after the play.

“I mean, they were mad at me on the sideline for stopping them,” Stokley told Mike Klis of the Denver Post. “It’s tough being a dad sometimes, you know?”

Four years ago, Stokley did something similar when he stopped then-teammate Brandon Marshall from picking up a celebration penalty, and Stokley said he takes a little credit for helping to mentor Marshall, just as he’s now doing with Thomas and Decker.

“He’s doing great on his own,” Stokley said of Marshall. “Now, I’ve got these other two knuckleheads I’ve got to mold. These kids, nowadays. You’ve got to put them in timeout.”
