The Houston Texans waste no time extending the contract of their 2011 first-round pick J.J. Watt through 2015.  Every NFL team has until May 3rd to declare whether or not they’ll extend their 2011 first-rounders through 2015.

This doesn’t come as a surprise as Watt is arguably the best defensive player in the league at the age of 25.  In his first three seasons, he’s recorded 217 tackles and 36.5 sacks.  The only reason why this maybe wasn’t the smartest of times to declare an extension for Watt is the fact that should he suffer a significant injury in the first phase of offseason training, the Texans may have wished they didn’t exercise their right to retain Watt.

Regardless, the Texans have Watt secured through 2015.  Beyond that, one would assume the Texans will sign him to a long-term deal with all probability that he’ll become the highest-paid defensive player in the league.  He certainly shows no signs of slowing.
