Tony Gonzalez: Matt Ryan is not an Elite Quarterback
Future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez knows a thing or two about the NFL. For many seasons he played on bad teams, and for many years played on very good teams.
He knows a thing or two about quarterbacks as well, and his recent comments about Falcons QB Matt Ryan may be surprising.
In a recent interview with ESPN the Magazine, Gonzalez said that Matt Ryan isn’t an elite quarterback – as many analysts say he is.
“Matt’s an excellent quarterback. But he’s not elite. He’s this close” said Gonzalez.
Now of course he isn’t bashing Ryan, but he is telling it like it is. Matt is a very good quarterback, and one that many GM’s would love to have on their roster. But he’s not elite.
Ryan had a down year after signing a five-year, $103.75 million extension in July – but it wasn’t any fault of his own. His offensive line took a step back and he lost several targets along the way, including Julio Jones to a season-ending foot injury.
Ryan passed for 4,515 yards and 26 touchdowns on the season just a year after leading the Falcons to the NFC Championship Game, however the results were completely different as Atlanta missed the playoffs with a 4-12 record.
The team has some work to do, but they have several key pieces that will be returning next season. Gonzalez isn’t one of them, as he officially retired with the NFL following the Pro-Bowl.
