What Really Happened To Robert Kraft’s Super Bowl Ring?
Back in 2005, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft joined a framework of businessmen to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. Kraft was fashionably equipped with a jewel-laced Super Bowl XXXIX ring on his finger, but left with a much lighter hand.
“I showed the president my most recent Super Bowl ring,” Kraft said back in ’05, as per the Boston Globe. Putin “was clearly taken with its uniqueness…at that point, I decided to give him the ring as a symbol of the respect and admiration that I have for the Russian people and the leadership of President Putin.”
That was Kraft’s words back then, but the Patriots owner has a different story now. Kraft admits that Putin walked off with the ring, a $25,000 piece of hardware that not just anyone can obtain, without his consent.
“I took out the ring and showed it to Putin,” Kraft said this week, as per the New York Post. “And he put it on and he goes, ‘I can kill someone with this ring,’ I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out.”
After the incident, Kraft received a call from the White House. Then President George W. Bush’s handler told him: “It would really be in the best interest of U.S.-Soviet relations if you meant to give the ring as a present.”
I personally don’t feel that a pursuit by Kraft towards his prized ring would have created the next world war, but you can’t just let someone jack your possessions. The item was not something petty like a pen or a handkerchief. A Super Bowl ring is like a baby that you cherish and hold forever, and President Vladimir Putin kidnapped Kraft’s ‘child’.
