Rookie QB EJ Manuel kept his calm after the Carolina Panthers punched in another field goal to take a 23-17 lead with less than a minute left to play in the 4th quarter of Sunday’s week 2 game in Orchard Park, NY.
Manuel led a great late game drive, with no timeouts, to bring the Buffalo Bills back from another heartbreaking loss.
During a post game interview Manuel said,
“I can’t even tell you how I felt. Honestly, I don’t know. I think I started crying there. I’m not usually an emotional guy, but like I said, I want to enjoy those type of things. I’ll be able to tell my grandkids about that 20-30 years from now. It’s definitely a momentous part of my young career.”
Manuel had a up and down day. He was strip sacked and threw an interception to Panthers line backer Luke Kuechly. But it didn’t effect Manuel’s demeanor. He was so calm in fact, it puzzled head coach Doug Marrone.
“He keeps telling me, and it gets me upset, he keeps telling me ‘I’m all right,’? If he’s all right, then why is he making these decisions? But that’s the type of kid he is. He’s very relaxed, so I’m like, ‘What did you see? Why’d you do that? That’s not the read.'”
Manuel obviously still has a long way to go. But he earned a lot of people’s respect. This was his 1st win as an NFL QB. It just s happened to to be on his father’s birthday. He was in the stand watching his son play. Manuel gave him the game ball. Class act.
