Since Citi Field opened in 2009, there has not been a lot of good to talk about. Not only have the Mets not had a winning season since the opening of the stadium, their play at the stadium has been even worse. It has been more like “The Citi of Blues” rather than a home field advantage for the Mets.
One of the only things that people have enjoyed at the new stadium has been the concessions. The Shake Shack is known throughout New York City as one of the best spots to get eats, and has been a trademark in Citi Field since it opened. That however may be changing.
Both Mets first baseman Lucas Duda and Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg got sick during their series in Queens this past weekend and both blame an undercooked burger from the Shake Shack for their illness. Duda had to be hospitalized on Friday while Sandberg claims to have lost six pounds in two days because of being unable to eat.
Here is more from ESPN New York:
Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg and New York Mets first baseman Lucas Duda both came down with food poisoning over the weekend at Citi Field, and both said Tuesday that they believe a hamburger from Shake Shack was the cause.
Sandberg told reporters in Philadelphia that he lost six pounds in two days.
“A couple of coaches took a bite and didn’t like what they saw and threw the rest away,” Sandberg said. “I was in a rush so I ended up putting it away.
“I had one piece of toast in two days, and I’m feeling fine about that. I don’t want anything in my stomach.”
Duda was hospitalized Friday afternoon, and later blamed an undercooked hamburger. He confirmed Tuesday at Yankee Stadium that the burger also came from Shake Shack.
“I think it was undercooked,” Duda said Tuesday.
Duda missed Friday night’s game against the Phillies, but was able to return to the Mets’ lineup Saturday and has played every game since then.
A Mets official said the team is investigating the matter.
So if you have been lucky enough to not get sick with the way the team has performed over the last five years, there’s an easy solution to join the party with the rest of the nautious Mets fans. Get a burger from the Shake Shack. You may be throwing up in no time.
