The New York Islanders received a warm welcome Thursday, as the team traveled to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, for training camp. The Barclays Center, which opened September 21, 2012, is set to be the new home for the Islanders starting in the 2015-2016 season. Until then, the Islanders will remain in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which has been the home of the Islanders since the teams inception in 1972.
Recently announced Islanders captain and first pick in the 2009 NHL draft, John Tavares, was impressed upon his visit at the venue the Islanders will call home after the 2014-2015 season.
According to NHL.com, Tavares looks forward to getting a feel for the venue during their first game against the New Jersey Devils.
“I think it will feel like a neutral-site game, because the Coliseum is our home for a couple more years and we don’t have a locker room here yet. But it will be nice to play the game for sure and get a feeling of what it will be like” Tavares said.
The Barclays Center will host its first-ever NHL game, as the Islanders take on the New Jersey Devils.
The team plays their first preseason game, Tuesday, September 17, as the Islanders travel to Calgary to take on the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, AB.
