On the heels of this year’s highly-successful Stadium Series that put NHL teams in a number of venues across the country, the American capital will host an outdoor hockey game next season, and they will face a significant Western Conference opponent on the other side.
TSN insider Bob McKenzie announced today that the opponent for the Washington Capitals will be the Chicago Blackhawks, who played outside at Soldier Field last season as a part of the Stadium Series. The Blackhawks have not played in the Winter Classic since the 2009 game at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
CHI will be WSH’s opponent in the 2015 Winter Classic.

While no venue has been confirmed at this time, NBC Washington’s Adam Vingan suggests that the game could be held at Nationals Stadium, home of the MLB’s Washington Nationals.
The Winter Classic is arguably the most noteworthy regular season game in the NHL, taking place on New Year’s Day. This contest should certainly draw considerable interest, with the Blackhawks retooling after a loss in the Western Conference Finals and the Capitals entering their first season with new head coach Barry Trotz.
