For more controversy in the Jets quarterback competition, let’s send it over to Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan; Rex, what’s the latest?
If the indecision in choosing a starter for Saturday’s preseason game wasn’t enough, Ryan’s latest sound bite sent shockwaves throughout the New York area on Wednesday. At his daily press conference following Wednesday’s practice, Ryan was critical of his rookie quarterback Geno Smith when one reporter asked him about his day.
“It was brutal,” Ryan said of Smith’s performance according to Darryl Slater of The Star Ledger. “That was Geno’s worst day. Obviously, the ankle is part of it, but way too many picks. [He] Did not look comfortable today. Obviously, he has to come back from it. He will come back from it. But it was a bad day.”
The assessment of Smith’s performance should not be looked into too deeply. Let’s remember, Smith is a rookie so he will have ups and downs throughout the season (which Ryan alluded to later in the press conference). He is also battling an ankle injury that no one seems to know the severity of except for Jets trainers. Ryan is known to use the media as a way to motivate his players, so maybe this is Rex trying to get the most out of his rookie quarterback?
Time will only tell, but one could certainly speculate that Ryan was rough on Smith in hopes that tomorrow he forces his hand in naming him the starter. If you ask Mark Sanchez though, you would think he would feel good after Wednesday’s practice. This certainly doesn’t lock up the starting job for Sanchez, but the pendulum has shifted in his direction for Saturday’s game. Ryan would later go on to say that he still hasn’t decided on who the starter against the Panthers, but if Smith isn’t healthy, one would assume that Sanchez would get the nod.
