Chiefs player kills girlfriend, then self 80

A surprising story is developing in Kansas City right now at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.. According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, two people, including a Chiefs player, have been shot. Glazer did not add any details on the names until the family of the player has been notified of the situation.

It sounds like a very tragic situation in Kansas City right now. Luckily, according to, there is no ongoing threat at the facility.

We’ll provide more details as the story develops on this Saturday.

UPDATE: Acording to KCTV5 in Kansas City, police are investigating two shootings. The two shootings, according to the source, involve a Chiefs player and his girlfriend. The unnamed Chiefs player, officials are saying, shot his girlfriend around 8 a.m. this morning at their residence. He then drove to the team’s facility at Arrowhead Stadium and shot himself, taking his own life. Arrowhead Stadium is now on lockdown after the shooting. We’ll continue to add details on the situation as they come in.\

UPDATE: According to Kansas City Police, a 25-year-old is the man who committed suicide outside of the team’s practice facility. Shortly after this was reported, the Chiefs issued a statement: “We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.” A name has been reported, but until it has been confirmed, we will wait for official word. Keep following this page for updates on the situation.

UPDATE: CBS reporter Jason LaCanfora broke the news of the player who shot himself.

While the name should be Jovan Belcher, La Canfora got his point across. Belcher was an undrafted free agent in 2009. After the 2012 season, Belcher was given a second-round tender by the Chiefs. However, none of that matters. It’s a sad day in football anytime there is any death within the NFL, and even more so when the player takes his own life. Benjamin Albright of relayed that the family of Belcher has been notified of the situation. Thoughts and prayers with them.

UPDATE: According to the KCPD via the Kansas City Star, the player was met by coaches outside of the facility before taking his own life. According to Panthers beat writer Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers will still travel to Kansas City at the same time as planned today (1:15 p.m.). Person followed up with the following tweet:

UPDATE: A source reported that team staff that Belcher was confronted by after getting out of his car were head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli. Belcher took his life shortly after, as was noted earlier in this story.

Albert Breer also reported some details on the tragic incident in a chain of tweets.

As of 11: 56 a.m. EST, a name has not been confirmed by the KCPD out of respect for his family.

UPDATE: The following is the transcript of the Kansas City Star’s Jeff Rosen’s interview with ESPN on SportsCenter:

We know the Chiefs player is 25 years old. He went to his girlfriend’s house this morning. The mother placed a call to the KCPD at 7:50 CST, saying that her daughter had been shot by her ‘on-again, off-again boyfriend.” We’re not exactly sure what happened between that time and 8:10, but at 8:10, the police were called to Arrowhead Stadium, the practice facility, they were there shortly after that. This is according to a KCPD spokesperson, they found Chiefs’ staffers and a player with a gun to his head in the parking lot. The officer got out of his car, heard  the gunshot and the player had killed himself. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. . . I know that the players and all personnel were evacuated from the facility right after that. They are going to be staying at their team hotel this evening for team policy the night before a game, in-town. . .I know that one of my reporters had spoken to somebody on the Chiefs staff who said that there were a couple of assistant coaches who were there at the time and were trying to calm the player down, he was very distraught, and they were unable to do that

UPDATE: Deadspin released some more details on the incident. Kasandra Perkins is thought to be the girlfriend of Belcher who suffered multiple gun shots earlier Saturday morning. According to sources, the mother of Perkins, who was visiting the family at the time, witnessed Belcher shoot her daughter multiple times and then leave the house. The mother then called police around 7:50 a.m.. Belcher then drove to the Chiefs’ practice facility. According to the Kansas City Police Department, Belcher was confronted by Pioli and Crennel. He then thanked them, walked away, and shot himself.
