Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, despite having only one playoff win in his entire career, was inked this offseason to a six-year, $108M contract. This did not sit well with former NFL defensive lineman Travis Johnson.
Via the Dallas Morning News, while Johnson was on air with a CSN Houston sports program, he had a myriad of negative things to say about Romo. Some of the highlights include:
“When Tony Romo got to Dallas he had everything around him and is a loser”
“Tony Romo was given everything he’s gotten”
“he has not earned a dollar he’s been given in this league”
“Matt Schaub will get the job done..he can take (the Texans) to a Super Bowl…. Tony Romo is not that guy. He is a thief. They need to bring him up on federal charges….he’s killing the franchise right now. He’s not worried about witnesses at all. He’s killing the franchise right now. There’s 75,000 witnesses and nobody’s going to testify against him.”
Wow. Tell us how you really feel, Travis.
However, it’s interesting that Mr. Johnson would have such harsh words for Tony Romo. Johnson never played with Romo, and never had to suffer Romo “killing” a season.
And if you look at Johnson’s own history, it’s clear that this is a little bit of the “pot calling the kettle black”. Johnson was a first-round pick of the Houston Texans back in 2005. After signing a $10M rookie deal with $7M guaranteed (not nearly as lucrative as Romo’s deal, but still), Johnson notched all of two sacks in four years before being traded to the San Diego Chargers in 2009. He spent two years there, and hasn’t played a down in the NFL since 2010.
So, perhaps Romo “hasn’t earned a dollar he’s been given in this league” but I’m pretty sure if the Texans had a chance to do it over again, they wouldn’t spend a first-round pick on Johnson and give him a $10M contract either.
Ah well. Everybody’s entitled to their opinion, and it’s pretty clear what Johnson thinks of Romo- thief, loser and franchise murderer.
