Greg Oden: ‘I know I’m one of the biggest busts in NBA history’
Greg Oden, depending on your opinion, might be the biggest bust in the history of the NBA. Of course injuries played more of a role in Oden’s demise, but the sad truth is that Oden will most likely never live up to the lofty expectations that was once placed on him. However, at 26 years old, Oden still has time left to carve out a productive NBA career.
But it appears Oden has accepted a role that would feature him at the end of the bench for the rest of his NBA career. And not only that, Oden has now admitted to being one of the biggest busts in NBA history.
Via Grantland/Mark Titus:
I asked him straight-up: “If this is the final chapter of the Greg Oden story — if you’re destined to be a benchwarmer for the rest of your career — are you OK with that? Will you be satisfied with your legacy?”
“I’m over all of that,” Greg told me. “I know I’m one of the biggest busts in NBA history and I know that it’ll only get worse as Kevin Durant continues doing big things … It’s frustrating that my body can’t do what my mind wants it to do sometimes. But worrying or complaining about it isn’t going to fix anything … I wish the circumstances would let me play more, but I certainly don’t regret coming back, and I don’t regret signing with the Heat.”
The Oden story is a sad one, and with every Kevin Durant scoring title or MVP that he accumulates, it just makes it worse for the former Portland Trail Blazer. It seems like wishful thinking to believe Oden could ever regain his old form, but for the sake of NBA fans, hopefully Oden can find a productive role in the NBA – however long that may be.
