The Philadelphia 76ers find themselves in a bit of a quandary as they sit with the #3 pick in next week’s draft. The player they want most is a guy who may or may not be available when the third pick comes around, and from what reports are saying, they do not want to take any chances.
According to sources, the Sixers are trying to do whatever they can to draft him. And there’s a sense that he wants to become a Sixer.
The player they covet is Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins, whose athleticism and upside is second to none in the draft. While Joel Embiid and Jabari Parker appear to be the better players right now, Wiggins could easily be the better player in five years, which is why many think Wiggins is the top guy to pick in this draft.
When you are picking in the top three, odds are high you are not in a “win now” situation. Thus, picking the player that will be best down the road makes sense. The 76ers seem to have this kind of perspective assuming if they had the #1 pick, they would draft Andrew Wiggins. The question that remains to be answered is whether or not the 76ers will roll the dice and hope Wiggins falls to them at number three, or if they will give up somebody to trade up for the number one pick and not risk missing out on Wiggins.
From what this report is saying, it sounds like they will try to trade the number three pick and a player possibly Thaddeus Young to the Cavaliers for the number one pick so that they can nab Wiggins. If they really think Andrew Wiggins is the best player in this draft and the guy who fits best with the direction they are trying to go, then a move like this will definitely be worth it.
