With concerns already about his back, the last thing Kansas center Joel Embiid needs is to injure another part of his body. Well unfortunately for him, he has “suffered a stress fracture to the navicular bone in his right foot” and will undergo surgery on Friday. Via ESPN:
Joel Embiid, who was considered the front-runner to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, will undergo surgery for stress fracture in his right foot Friday, his agent confirmed in a statement.
“Joel Embiid suffered a stress fracture to the navicular bone in his right foot,” Arn Tellem said. “He is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow. Joel will be unable to participate in any additional workouts, and will not attend the draft in New York. We will have no further comment until after the surgery.”
What this now does is pave the way for Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker to go #1 in the draft, and perhaps more significantly alter potential draft trades. The 76ers who want to trade up for Andrew Wiggins just got hurt by this injury to Embiid as did the Utah Jazz who want to trade up for Jabari Parker. With Wiggins and Parker the clear #1 and #2 choices now, the odds that Cleveland and Milwaukee stay put is much higher. As for Embiid, his draft stock could plummet like Nerlens Noel’s draft stock did last year. The possible outcomes from this revelation about Embiid’s foot are endless which makes things so much more crazy and unpredictable as we head into the draft.
