It’s early April and baseball literally just started, so nobody is looking ahead to October when the baseball postseason begins – along with the cooler weather. Baseball fans want to enjoy the next several months of warm weather, afternoon baseball games and hitting up the ballpark with the family to watch your favorite team. But for the true baseball fan that looks to take advantage of winning some extra cash using his knowledge of the game, they are already slotting in future bets for teams with the best odds to win the World Series.
The reason you want to check out the daily and future bets now, is so that you can jump on one of the teams that aren’t predicted to be one of the popular teams, and thus, you get more bang for your buck come payout time. With that said, here are three MLB teams that are worth a shot at risking a bet on in hopes of cashing out come fall time.
3.) New York Yankees
The New York Yankees and “darkhorse MLB team” aren’t usually synonymous. However, these aren’t the Yankees from the last century – or even last decade. Under the new Yankees management, the days of signing players in their 30s to fat contracts are over and the days of growing a team through their farm system are back. New York has some young bats with a ton of promise. Greg Bird had a monster spring and could solidify the first base position in New York for the next decade. Didi Gregorius is injured, but has been an improving player and Gary Sanchez is poised to break out as the next New York and MLB superstar.
Pitching concerns, specifically starting pitching, will be the Yanks’ Achilles Heel and will need to get a much-improved season out of Luis Severino while hoping C.C. Sabathia can give them one more decent year. The bullpen has the makings to be dominate with Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman at the back end. It seems like the Yanks might be a year or two away, or just a player or two away. The next few months should determine that.
2.) Pittsburgh Pirates
Unfortunately, the Pirates are in a division with the Chicago Cubs, a team that looks poised to win many more World Series – never thought those words would come out of my mouth. However, the Pirates basically have everyone from the 2015 team that won 98 games and have a nice young pitching core that was bolstered by the signing of Ivan Nova.
Pittsburgh will need big seasons out of Andrew McCutchen, Gregory Polanco and Tyler Gasnow if they want to be seen as a true threat. The Central is a tough division, but the Pirates have the youth and talent to make it interesting – and all it takes in baseball is to have a few hot pitchers come postseason time. At +6,000, this would be a nice futures bet.
1.) Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers have plenty of talent on their roster, but like the Pirates, are stuck in the same division as the Cleveland Indians. However, Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Ian Kinsler can swing with the best of them. Ace Justin Verlander and last season’s Rookie of the Year winner, Michael Fulmer gives the Tigers a fighting shot against anyone. This makes the Tigers and interesting future bet at +3500 because of the talent the team possesses.
Detroit needs Cabrera to stay healthy and put up a monster year with their pitching to be consistent – including the backend of the bullpen. If the Tigers can avoid any serious injuries to major players, they could be challenging the Indians come October for the AL crown.
