Recently, Anquan Boldin said that he will not take a pay cut to stay with the Ravens, and if released he will retire. In the irony of ironies, teammate Joe Flacco has said that he support’s Boldin’s decision.
Via USA Today, Flacco said without Boldin “we don’t win the Super Bowl” and that he’s a “huge part of the team”. Of course, making this so interesting is the fact that if Flacco hadn’t lobbied for his own bloated, $20M/year contract, there likely would have been enough cap space to keep Boldin around without having to force the wide receiver to either accept a pay cut or his release.
So despite the fact that Boldin is someone Flacco “wants to see back” with the Ravens next year, Flacco may be partially responsible for Boldin’s inability to return. Either way, something’s gotta give. Boldin may have to bite the bullet and take a pay cut to remain with the Ravens, or he’ll have to go his own separate way because he sticks to his guns….and these types of potential cuts looming, it’s looking more and more like Flacco’s $120M contract is going to cost the Ravens more than just a pile of money.
