Landon Donovan issues classy response on Facebook to World Cup snub

  • David Whitlock

Fans of United States soccer reacted with emotion from anger to disappointment when they found out that the leading goal scorer of all time Landon Donovan was left off the 2014 World Cup roster.  The three-time World Cup veteran (Japan/Korea, Germany, South Africa) took the news with class, issuing a heartfelt thanks on his official Facebook Fan page:

The Americans face a tough draw in Group G (a so called “group of death”) with Germany, Portugal and Ghana.  The action begins on June 16 against Ghana, a team that has defeated them in two straight World Cups, both by a 2-1 score (group play in 2006, knockout round in 2010).  Had Donovan been selected for his fourth World Cup, he would have matched legends such as Brazil’s Pele, Argentena’s Diego Maradona, and France’s Theirry Henry, alongside fellow Americans Casey Keller and Claudio Reyna.
