LeBron James upset about not winning Defensive Player of the Year award
After Memphis Grizzlies center, Marc Gasol won the Defensive Player of the Year award by 14 first place votes, LeBron James was upset about himself not winning the award.
Over the past year, LeBron James has won just about every major accolade basketball has to offer. From NBA Champion, MVP, Finals MVP, All NBA First Team, All Star, Gold Medal Olympian to being the prohibitive favorite to win the NBA MVP award once again this year. Jeez ‘Bron, let someone else win an award!
Memphis center Marc Gasol won the Defensive Player of the Year, finishing 14 first place votes ahead of LeBron James, with Serge Ibaka third.
During his first media availability since the announcement, James made his feelings clear.
“It sucks,” James said. “It sucks. It sucks.”
James was asked if his candidacy for other awards — notably the MVP — hurt his chances.
“I don’t know,” James said. “It definitely sucks, though. Finishing second? Who wants to finish second?”
Was this his best defensive season?
“Probably,” James said. “I mean, I guard everybody on the floor. I don’t know if there’s one player in NBA history who’s guarded one through five (positions). It’s over with now, but that’s cool.”
To be fair to LeBron, he probably does have a point. He is the game’s best perimeter defender and does guard just about every position on the floor. Maybe the voters will be more cognizant of LeBron’s defensive skills next season.
