Marvin Lewis texts AJ Green, tells him to “get talks moving”
Now that the Cincinnati Bengals have locked up quarterback Andy Dalton through 2020, the next question is when his favorite target AJ Green will receive a long-term deal.
Via Peter King of MMQB.com, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis texted the receiver, and directed him to tell his agent to get talks moving. Lewis should probably get that same message to Cincinnati’s front-office, as they have been notoriously slow at getting big deals done.
Lewis wants his core players signed as soon as possible, and Green is next in line as he is one of the NFL’s best young receivers. However, a contract isn’t expected anytime soon. Green’s cap hits the next two seasons are significantly higher than Dalton’s.
The popular notion is that Cincinnati will try to structure Green’s contract like they did Dalton’s, with minimal guarantees in exchange for a long-term commitment. Given that Green could cash in easily in free agency, the Bengals must be nuts to think he would accept a lowball offer in terms of guaranteed money when his market value would be through the roof.
If Green refuses that type of structuring, Cincinnati would have no choice but to pay up or use the franchise tag, the latter running the risk of losing him to free agency after 2015.
With Dalton’s contract being team-friendly and flexible, the Bengals could easily work around it to pay Green what he deserves, and it would behoove them to do it soon. If Green hits free agency, another team will surely throw the bank at him for his services.
