NBA Veterans Say There Are Some Bounties In The NBA

In light of all the Gregg Williams allegations of the use of bounties on specific players, the NBA inserted itself back into the forefront with some allegations of their own. A few veteran players interviewed this past week confessed to their own type of bounty system in the NBA

Cedric Maxwell who played 11 NBA seasons told WBZ-TV’s Steve Burton that the Celtics put on a bounty on one player in particular.

“We did it in the NBA. We had a guy, Len Elmore, used to love to take charges,” Maxwell said. “He’s an analyst right now for CBS. You might want to hear this Len. We had a bounty on you. If you stepped on his chest, you got paid.

“Every time he tried to take a charge and you stepped on him, you got paid,” Maxwell said. “What are they going to do, come back and fine me now?”

Maxwell would go on to say there was no extra pay-out, but that the Celtics wanted to step on him

“It was about $10, but it was enough,” Maxwell said. “[Elmore] was wondering why guys were stepping on him.

“Not take him out; just putting an imprint on his chest, the size of my shoe,” he said. “Don’t worry about it, he’s OK.”

Flash forward to Charles Barkley talking on the Dan Patrick radio show on Monday:

“One time…” Barkley said, although he would not incriminate the player targeted or the team he plays for. “We were getting beat by 30 points, back, this was in my Philadelphia days. I’m a firm believer if a guy shoots a three that you knock his ass as far in the stands as you possibly can. We were getting beat by 30 or 40, I can’t remember, and this guy was shooting threes and running up and down the court, and I said ‘Hey, we got to hurt that guy right there.”

Chuck also has an issue with the story coming out. “You have to be a punk to snitch that out,” Barkley said. “That’s like giving a reporter an anonymous quote.”

Leave it to Chuck

I think the bounty that William had with the Saints and other teams is worse than anything any other major North American sport has seen in decades.
