Nets center Brook Lopez has broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot, which will end his season. It has already been a season of turmoil and frustration for the Nets before this news came out. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry, Andrei Kirilenko, and Deron Williams have all been banged up throughout the season, but there was hope that maybe if they all got healthy they could start winning games and make a run in the playoffs. But with their franchise center Brook Lopez done for the season, hopes of any sort of miracle have gone straight down the tube. Lopez was by far their best player this season, averaging 20.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. The Nets have no way to make up for his production, and at this point, they should seriously consider trading Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and see if they can get some draft picks for the 2014 NBA Draft. There are some seriously competitive teams who would welcome their veteran leadership in their locker rooms. E.g. the Clippers (though KG can’t go there because of Rivers), the Grizzlies, or maybe even the Rockets for I dunno, Omer Asik?
The point is, the Nets are NOT winning a championship. Those dreams are a pie in the sky, and now it’s time for them to get serious about re-tooling and re-building their team around Deron Williams and Brook Lopez. Everybody else on that team should be expendable and should be viewed as a viable tradable asset, including Joe Johnson! It may sound crazy, but the more you think about it, it just makes sense. They aren’t winning a title, they have guys who other contending teams would love to have, and the 2014 draft is STACKED with talent. The Nets should make some moves for draft picks, tank the season, and build around Deron Williams and Brook Lopez and whoever they can get their hands on in the draft. To me at least, this seems to be the smartest move to make at this point.
