John Wall Is Nearing A 5 Year, $80M Extension With Wizards 0

For over the past few months and counting, Wizards PG John Wall has been saying he’s deserving of a max contract. Well now it looks like he is about to get paid what he wants. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting:

The Washington Wizards have made significant progress toward completing a five-year, $80 million maximum contract extension for guard John Wall, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Wizards will make Wall their designated franchise player, allowing him to get the fifth year on the extension, sources said.

The Wizards and Wall’s agent, Dan Fegan, have until Oct. 31 to complete an agreement on the rookie extension for Wall to avoid restricted free agency next summer, but are moving swiftly to reach a deal.

Many people have debated whether or not he is deserving of a max contract, but given that he is the only real bright spot on this Wizards team and the only guy who could likely evolve into a franchise player, this move really is a no brainer for the Wizards. Expect the deal to be done very soon, and also don’t expect it to cut close to the October 31 deadline. The Wizards know that they have to pay John Wall this kind of money if the want any hope of being competitive over the coming decade.
