Reports would indicate that the Memphis Grizzlies are shopping small forward, Rudy Gay. Gay’s name has been mentioned in trade talks as of late, as the Grizzlies look for a suitable deal that would net them value and get them under the luxury tax, in hopes that they may shift their personnel.
The Grizz, who currently sit 2nd in the West’s Southwest division (22-10) behind the San Antonio Spurs (27-10) may be looking to make some moves involving either Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, or both.
Gay is owed $37.1 Million over the next two years of his current contract and the grizzlies seem determined to not be the team who picks up the tab on that deal. Of course, they’re not going to just give him away. Rudy Gay is having an average Rudy Gay type season, averaging 17.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. The Phoenix Suns have said to be hot on his trail and could offer players, plus draft picks to acquire Gay’s services in The Desert. The Suns own the Lakers’ first-round picks in 2013 and 2015 and could package them in with say, Michael Beasley and Jared Dudley to match salaries in the potential deal.
A move that would give the Grizzlies a capable small forward in return, as well as a solid player in Dudley and two future 1st -rounders (who could net some worth given the Lakers’ current state).
Hold the phones, because the Toronto Raptors (among others) have now tossed their hats in the action and seem to be zoned in on landing the swingman.
Per Marc Stein, ESPN:
Sources told ESPN.com this week that the Raptors — who tried to make a play for Gay before the 2012 NBA Draft — remain seriously “interested” in the Grizzlies’ leading scorer and are trying to assemble trade packages to bring the 26-year-old to Toronto after preliminary talks with Memphis.
Among the trade chips that the Raptors are believed to be dangling, in addition to draft considerations, are veteran point guard Jose Calderon(who possesses an expiring contract worth $10.6 million) and young big man Ed Davis.
In addition to Phoenix and Toronto, the Sacramento Kings have been said to be pursuing a deal involving Gay as well. Expect more teams to come crawling out of the wood-work, as Rudy Gay is a very valued player in the association. Most teams will probably at least inquire about a trade for Gay since the Grizzlies seem serious about cutting ties with Gay’s $17.8 million next season and $19.3 million in 2014-15.
It’ll be interesting to see if any real contenders take a stab at Gay in the upcoming week or so. Rudy is the type of player that would really give a boost to a team on the verge of making noise.
