ESPN.com is reporting that Paul Millsap will not stay in Utah and has instead agreed to a 2 year, $19M deal with the Atlanta Hawks. This news means that the Utah Jazz are without both Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson, who earlier this week agreed to a huge deal with the Charlotte Bobcats. The Jazz clearly are looking to re-build around Trey Burke, Alec Burks, Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, and Enes Kanter. The Jazz have decided it would be better to let these young guys fend for themselves and grow as a young unit instead of having their growth stunted by solid veterans who weren’t leading the Jazz to a championship.
As for the Hawks, this move indicates that Josh Smith is likely on his way out of Atlanta, and they are looking for a guy to replace him. Multiple reports say that the Hawks and Rockets are working on a sign and trade that will send Josh Smith to the Houston Rockets and Omer Asik to the Hawks.
