The Raptors will acquire Gay while giving up Jose Calderon and Ed Davis. Details are not all out on the table just yet, but it is expected that the Detroit Pistons will serve as the third team to take on Jose Calderon.
According to ESPN:
The Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors have agreed in principle on a trade that will send leading scorer Rudy Gay to the Raptors, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.
Sources told ESPN.com that the Grizzlies will acquire forward Ed Davis and veteran guard Jose Calderon from the Raptors and then move Calderon on to a third team to ultimately make this a three-team deal.
The Detroit Pistons, sources said, are one of the prime options to take on Calderon, having pursued the Spanish floor leader all season.
Logic would lead one to believe that the Detroit Pistons will send Tayshaun Prince or Corey Maggette back to Memphis, as they will need a replacement for Gay at small forward.
Toronto, as one of least popular destinations in the NBA, has been looking for a star player to bring into town since the offseason, where they actively pursued Steve Nash. Gay is under a maximum contract, but it looks like the Raptors got their guy.
Memphis has been looking to shred salary and avoid the tax since new ownership took over, which was clear in their recent trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Many around Memphis have become frustrated with Gay’s production, given his physical tools and tremendous upside.
