We all know Brandon Jacobs is never at a loss for words. Who can forget his verbal thrashing of Rex Ryan last season after the Giants beat up on the Jets?
Mike Florio reported that during appearance on KNBR San Francisco, Jacobs addressed the issue of his recent failures in short yardage situations. He first blames the Giants offensive line, then immediately retracts the statement:
“You gotta have the attitude to do it, and also you gotta have the offensive linemen in front of the back to be able to get it done. I think the 49ers have what it takes to be able to get that yard. No one’s perfect…when I was with the Giants, we had issues down the line. Of course I took the blame for those because I was holding the ball.”
Jacobs then continued, apparently realizing he said something he probably shouldn’t have, with an apologetic tone and self-blaming words:
“But ultimately, at the end of the day it is my fault because I do have the ball and that’s what people see, but there’s a lot more than that going on. But like I said, I think the 49ers definitely got what it takes to be able to get that one yard.”
Given his freakish size, I am not sure how Jacobs fails in short yardage situations, he’s the type of guys who shouldn’t need overly superior run blocking to hit a hole hard and pick up a yard. But as life goes, whenever an issue is placed on your shoulders, the urge to deflect blame arises. I can’t say I had any problem with what he said about Rex Ryan, however. If people are getting worked up over Jacobs’ mouth, perhaps someone should be looking into a muzzle for sexy Rexy.
