Although the number 88 isn’t officially retired by the Indianapolis Colts, it appears nobody else will wear it again for the team. This includes recently signed wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who wore 88 with the New York Giants.
88 is a sacred number in Indy, as it belonged to the franchise’s all-time leading receiver Marvin Harrison, as well as Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey.
Nicks had previously said he wanted to keep wearing No. 88 but that he didn’t know if he could in Indianapolis.
“Everybody knows I love those eights on my chest, but we’ll have to see how that pans out,” Nicks said when he signed with the Colts.
88 will most likely be retired eventually, so there’s nothing wrong with acting like it already is. Nicks will instead wear #14 for the Colts.
