With a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers looming this Sunday, the New York Jets and Rex Ryan cannot afford to lose their top defender Darrelle Revis. While it is only Wednesday, there looks like there is a chance that Revis will miss the game.

After suffering a concussion against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Revis has been held out of practice this week and has yet to be cleared for contact.

Rich Cimini of reports that Revis has been cleared to resume physical activity after suffering a concussion in the season-opening victory over the Bills. That means Revis can participate in activities such as running and lifting, but cannot be contacted.

Revis will not practice Wednesday and has been limited to running and lifting. The sixth-year veteran has attended meetings all week and Ryan described Revis as engaged and alert, an encouraging sign out of New York.

Ryan said the Jets would monitor Revis and follow league protocol before making a decision about his status for Sunday.

Ultimately that choice isn’t in the hands of Revis or the coaches. As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk pointed out on Tuesday, Revis’ status is up to an independent neurologist because of the NFL’s concussion protocols. The fact that the Jets are calling it a “mild” concussion means nothing because a player either has or hasn’t been concussed under the terms of the program. Revis will have to pass all of the tests before he’s allowed to get back on the field.
