Very few women have held meaningful positions in football operations, but Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post explained how Dawn Aponte could be the league’s first female General Manager.
Aponte is the current V.P. of football administration for the Miami Dolphins, in which she plays a big role over the teams contractual negotiations. She also works closely with G.M. Jeff Ireland.
According to a league source Aponte approach is mostly by the book for the teams stance, by doing this the Dolphins are one of the cap-healthiest teams in the NFL.
Aponte also isn’t afraid to say no when Ireland won’t, as she often plays the bad cop to Ireland’s good cop during contract talks.
This combo has allowed the team to sign big players this year like Mike Wallace with low cap numbers for the 2013 season. However their cap will spike up next year and it will be her job to keep the cap in order.
But is there a owner willing to take a chance and trust their team to a female? Especially when the G.M. outranks the Head Coach of a franchise. If there is one who could do the job it is Dawn Aponte.
