After placing Jahvid Best on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Monday, the Detroit Lions are now even thinner at the running back position.

The Lions hoped Jahvid Best or Mikel Leshoure would be their answer at the running back position but neither can stay healthy or out of trouble.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reported Tuesday that Mayhew has been calling around to teams in search of help.

Kevin Smith is the starter, but he hurt his ankle against the Oakland Raiders over the weekend. Meanwhile, the concussion-addled Best will open the season on the physically unable to perform list and Leshoure has been suspended for the first two games of the season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Unless the team can find a team willing to trade a running back, the Detroit Lions will have to live and die through the passing game.
