A high-ranking team official of the Redskins confirmed to ESPN.com that Kirk Cousins will replace Robert Griffin III as the quarterback for Washington vs Atlanta this Sunday.
Coach Mike Shanahan had said Monday during his 20-minute press conference that he was contemplating benching RGIII to ensure is health going into the off-season. While this does make sense with your franchise quarterback being that the Redskins don’t have anything to play for this season other than pride, you’d think you would want to give your future all the reps possible to continue his growth and development. It is the playoffs last year that continue to haunt the Redskins when they decided to keep RGIII in while he was nursing a knee injury.
A team source reported Tuesday that owner Dan Snyder would not intervene with any coaching decisions Shanahan were to make at quarterback. While this holds true at this point, you must consider how this will most likely affect ticket sales from the Washington fan base. Even with RGIII in the lineup, however, FedEX Field was emptied out during the third quarter of last Sunday’s blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Many felt that Shanahan’s actions along with his team’s performance this season would cost him his job. It was expected that he would be fired on Monday, but the hot seat for Shanahan cooled off when his press conference occurred and ended with no word of his termination.
