Over the past few years, running quarterbacks have been taking over the NFL. Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson, and Colin Kaepernick are leading the surge of true dual-threat quarterbacks who are equally talented as runners and passers. Their unique skill sets make it extremely hard for video game developers to replicate these movements.
For anyone out there that’s played Madden NFL 13, you have probably experienced some difficulty with using these rushing quarterbacks. Join the club.
Thankfully, the developers at EA Sports have been receptive to the changes in the game of football and are highlighting a new addition called “Run Free” that will be added to Madden NFL 25. The changes really will be applicable to any ball carrier, but it will be especially helpful for athletic quarterbacks trying to break a long run. As Chris Strauss of USA Today Sports reports, this is a change that is intended to take the historic video game franchise into a new era.
“Last year was an incredibly special year when you look at the quarterbacks. The RG III’s, the Russell Wilsons, the Colin Kaepernicks – they really changed the way offenses play in this league,” Anthony Stevenson, Sr. Director of Marketing for EA Sports. “It feels so much different – the pistol offense, the read option – it feels a lot different to me than the wildcat where you might throw in a couple plays but in a couple of years it kind of faded away. This doesn’t feel like that at all. This is personnel driven and you’re talking about the future quarterbacks that are going to be the Pro Bowlers for the next ten to 15 years and take the torch from the Peyton Mannings and Tom Bradys. We wanted to make sure we represented that in this year’s game so we have a campaign called Run Free.
“We’ve gone from roughly eight moves to 38 different moves you can do. The thing that players like RGIII are so good at is putting different moves together at one time. In the past if you were going to do a spin move in Madden, you’d have to complete your spin move before you could do something else. These guys today start with a spin move and then decide ‘I’m going to plant real quick and juke right.’”
You can see some of these moves in action in the “Run Free” trailer courtesy of IGN. RGIII is featured in the trailer, along with running backs Adrian Peterson, LeSean McCoy, Doug Martin, and Arian Foster, and even wide receiver and Madden 13 cover player Calvin Johnson.
For a game that has lacked many truly game-breaking additions in recent years, the “Run Free” feature surely promises to amaze Madden players. Madden NFL 25 hits stores on August 27th.
