All year long we’ve heard about the QB situation in New York. It’s either been Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow.
But now, following Sanchez’ benching vs. Arizona, a new name has risen, and that’s Greg McElroy. The Jets’ seventh round pick from the University of Alabama was thrown into the spotlight Sunday after Rex Ryan benched Mark Sanchez (The one and only time Tim Tebow was inactive, I might add) during a horrible performance where he threw three interceptions.
McElroy made the best of his opportunity and became the only QB in NFL history to lead his team to a go-ahead score on his first NFL Drive.
The Jets ended up winning on McElroy’s five completions for 29 yards and a score, and that seems to be enough to catapult him to the top of the owner’s depth chart.
The New York Daily News reports that Jets’ owner Woody Johnson would like to see the team move forward with McElroy and start fresh. Given that Rex Ryan hasn’t ruled that out, it’s a possibility.
The same report however, says that GM Mike Tannenbaum and OC Tony Sparano would like to stick with Sanchez. Rex Ryan? He hasn’t made up his mind.
We’ll see come Sunday whether it’s Sanchez, Tebow or McElroy starting in Jacksonville. Jags Owner Shad Khan would love to see Tebow starting in his hometown, and I’m sure Jets fans would too. In fact, they’d rather have anyone but Sanchez at this point.
