Cleveland’s new quarterback Johnny Manziel leads the 2014 Draft pack with a top-selling jersey, along with a hefty amount of Browns tickets sold in Cleveland. The more remarkable story is that Day three draft pick Michael Sam is right behind him, despite being at a 48-hour disadvantage.
According to Cyd Zeigler of Outsports.com, Sam had the second-highest-selling jersey among all draft picks, right being Johnny Football.
Behind Manziel and Sam are Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, and Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles.
“This is unprecedented for a Day 3 pick, let alone a seventh round pick, to crack the top five rookies sold following Draft weekend,” league spokesperson Joanna Hunter said.
This stat indicates the strong support that Sam has being the first openly gay player to land on an NFL roster. Such a ground-breaking feat makes this player someone who is easy to root for as we as a society push to evolve and continue to accept one another for who we are.
